Looking at Mary at Easter Print E-mail

In 1905, the Sisters of St Joseph re-elected a partially paralysed Mother Mary Mackillop their Superior General.  Though clear in thought and speech, Mary had been confined to a wheel chair for four years after a stroke that left her right side paralysed.

This event reminds us of a most important fact:  Mary was re-elected because of who she was as a person – not because of what she could or could not do.  Mary is a saint because the Easter power of Christ, the power of his Resurrection, made her a holy person as she prayed, worshipped and lived as Jesus taught.

Christmas Message 2008 Print E-mail

This year is ending with so much turmoil on so many fronts.   The finance crisis has left people insecure because of a drop in their superannuation benefits.  There is the fear of businesses collapsing and becoming unemployed.  We may be tempted to wonder if Christ’s ‘peace on earth’ is a fantasy.

The greatest means he left us to do so is the Eucharist. But to draw on this power, believers need to prepare themselves for the basic experiences Jesus offers through the Eucharist, which he instituted at the Last Supper.

Easter Message 2007 - Priests and the Easter Experience Print E-mail

One of the most moving elements in the celebration of Easter is the sight of our priests renewing their priestly commitment during the Mass of the Oils. Easter reminds us that Jesus instituted the priesthood at the Last Supper. It reminds us too that priests are called to be instruments of the Risen Christ for his people.

Message 2006 - Let us Respect our Australian Values Print E-mail
Australia is a nation that loves celebrations. Australia Day is one of our biggest. We get together for ceremonies, including the raising of our national flag and to welcome new citizens.
