The insurance on St Patrick’s was $4.1 million. Enough to pay for a
modern concrete and glass building with perhaps the same life
expectancy as an average city building - a life expectancy measured in
decades, not centuries.
People do not want that kind of building overlooking their fair city. They want a Cathedral that looks like a Cathedral. To create it, and redevelop the site for improved vehicle access and parking, the Catholic Diocese of Bunbury is embarking on an estimated $17 million redevelopment of the Cathedral precinct to meet the current and future need.
In recognition of the vital role Cathedrals play in community life,
both the State and Commonwealth Governments made disaster relief grants
for the rebuilding of the precinct of $2.5 million and $5 million
respectively. This leaves an amount of $3 million to be raised from the “Rebuilding the Cathedral” Campaign to meet the target.
