Pope Benedict XVI has expressed his sympathy for the people of the Bunbury Diocese on the loss of St Patrick’s Cathedral, following the tornado that ripped through Bunbury on 16th May 2005. The Pope’s Message was passed on to the Catholic community of Bunbury by Bishop Gerard Holohan during a farewell Liturgy of the Word in St. Mary’s Church, South Bunbury this morning. ITEM OF HISTORY

12th March, 1967 - Opening of Restored Cathedralf from the diary of Bishop Goody

"Concelebrated Mass concluded the function. The concelebrants were, with myself, Archbishop of Adelaide James Gleeson, Bishop of Port Pirie Bryan Gallagher, Bishop of Geraldton Francis K Thomas, auxiliary Bishop of Perth Myles McKeon, Abbot of New Norcia Gregory Gomez. The Bishop of Geraldton gave the Homily.

The Anglican Bishop of Bunbury, Rolf Hawkins and many other ministers were present. The Mayor of Bunbury Dr. E. Manea and the Town Clerk and representatives from every parish of the Diocese and many others. There was tea afterwards at the R.S.L. Hall.

The additions to the Cathedral included - new steps, new front porch, a spire, a new vestry. The Sanctuary was re-arranged with the new high altar at the West end of the sanctuary, the throne at the East end. A Blessed Sacrament chapel beside the sanctuary, the new Lady Chapel just within the front doors (the former baptistry) and a small baptistery in the south aisle near the Sanctuary.
